Volunteer Spotlight: Adam Meyer
Meet one of our exceptional volunteers.
by Diana Cole, student intern, Mercy Medical Center Volunteer Services
As a senior at UW Oshkosh, Adam Meyer puts his education into action. Adam has been a volunteer at Mercy since March of 2010. He began in the Emergency department and is now volunteering in the Radiology area. He is presently assisting the department as they perform X-rays, CT scans and MRIs.
When asked what he liked most about Mercy as an organization, he responded, “The people. It doesn’t matter who I meet—staff members and volunteers have made me feel welcome.” He feels, as many of us do, that Mercy’s organization is exceptional and the people who work and volunteer here make the organization a wonderful place to work. He added, “I have never met anyone at Mercy that I did not like.”
Adam is particularly impressed with the manner in which the Radiology staff has made him feel welcome. “I truly feel like I am part of the team, not a volunteer. They allow me to assist with a wide variety of procedures, and this has been an awesome supplement to my education.”
Adam’s experience with Mercy will follow him when he graduates next year and heads off to a graduate school. His experience with patient interaction has proven to be an invaluable part of his education. “Above all, I will take the experiences I have had with patient contact with me so that I can better serve the facilities where I will be employed by making the patients feel comfortable with the procedures that will be performed.”
If you have the opportunity to meet this future medical professional, be sure to let him know that you appreciate all he has done to support our organization. He had one piece of advice for those prospective radiology students. “Don’t jump into a program right away. Learn as much possible about the program before entering it and be open to new experiences. And above all, don’t be afraid to ask questions.”
Additionally, Adam would like to express his gratitude to the Mercy Medical Center staff for allowing him this opportunity and all of the experiences that came with it. He can honestly say that Mercy has had a very positive impact on his life and his future career.
