Mercy Volunteer Opportunities

Here are the codes used in the volunteer descriptions below:

D = Monday-Friday days
W = Saturday or Sunday
AM = Morning

ACTOR [F/1-2 hours]
Play various patient roles to facilitate clinician communication practice and coaching skills.
AQUARIUM MAINTENANCE [F/approx. 1-2 hrs per week]
Volunteers maintain the fish aquarium in the Outpatient Procedure area. Knowledge of aquarium fish and tank maintenance is needed. Volunteers make sure that fish food and maintenance supplies are adequate.

ARTHRITIS TREATMENT CENTER AT MERCY OAKWOOD [2-4 hours a month/F]
Volunteer duties include filing, photocopying, collating arthritis/pain information and putting into folders for patients, entering computer data.

facegear.gif AUDIO VISUAL EQUIPMENT ASSISTANT [2nd & 4th Wednesdays, 11:30am - 2:30pm]
Assists in set up of A/V equipment for monthly conference, videotape conference, monitor A/V equipment and secure other materials needed for the presentation. Attention to detail, customer service and working knowledge of equipment and supplies is needed.
BIO-MED [D/F]
Volunteers provide general assistance to Affinity Health System/Bio-Med Services with the disassembly of electronic equipment to make certain their components are disposed of in the proper waste stream.

CARING COMPANION [Averages 4 hours per match/F]
Volunteers provide short term supportive services to assigned patients after hospital or nursing home discharge and/or provide courier service to clients of Mercy's Passport 55 program. Supportive services may include reassurance phone calls, grocery shopping, and light housekeeping, or picking up items from the pharmacy or loan closet.

CENTRAL SUPPLY STICKERING [D/F]
Volunteers put sticker labels on central supply items.

CHILDREN'S SCREENING SERVICES [F]
Volunteers provide vision screenings and hand washing education to Oshkosh area preschool, parochial school and daycare children. There is an annual membership fee of $10.

Volunteers wipe handrails with disinfectant or provide other basic cleaning services.

CLERICAL/COMPUTER ENTRY VOLUNTEERS [F]
Volunteers provide clerical assistance to staff that may include filing records, assisting with mailings, stocking office supplies, photocopying and other duties as requested. The different areas of MMC that currently utilize clerical volutneers include Volunteer SErvices, Spiritual Services, Cardiac Rehab, Breast Center, Wellness & Prevention, Cardiorespiriatory, Health Information Services, Pain Clinic and Training and Development.

Volunteers provide refreshments to families of patients on units within the building. Duties include preparing coffee, setting up coffee cart, going on rounds.
facegear.gif COMMUNITY CANCER INFORMATION CENTER (CCIC) [D/F]
Volunteers needed to help Cancer Center patients in choosing a wig. Ability to cut and style preferred.
COUNSELOR ASSISTANT [F]
Volunteers support counselors in preparation for and during Group Therapy meetings for persons recovering from drug addiction.

Volunteers create crafts, knit or sew items for sale in the Gift Shop for special events, or to be given as gifts to newborns/patients/families. Different areas include Projects, Happy Flowers and Tray Favors, newborn hats and lap quilts.

Volunteers assist Emergency department staff, patients and visitors with a variety of duties to enhance the customer service in Emergency Services.
facegear.gif ENTERTAINER/ENCOURAGER [F]
Volunteers provide opportunities for patient expression, participation and social reintegration.
facegear.gif ERRANDS [D(EVE)/W(AM/PM)]
Volunteers deliver supplies and equipment to and from nursing units, ancillary departments and support services. Volunteers provide wheelchair transport of patients from unit discharge to car at entrance of the hospital. Duties also include the pick up and delivery of late food trays from the Serving Kitchen. Mailings and other projects may be requested by staff as needed. Volunteers assist visitors with patient information, directions, and delivery of mail/flowers as needed. (This position is especially good for students, teens, and those who want the opportunity to observe health care professionals)

EUCHARISTIC MINISTER [F]
Volunteers distribute the Sacrament of the Eucharist to patients, as assigned by the spiritual services staff. Volunteers also assist with church services when requested.

Provides food prep assistance in the food service kitchen two hours once per week.

FUNDRAISING [F]
Be involved with variety of fundraising activities to generate charitable funds to enhance Mercy Medical Center patient care & improve our community health status.

facegear.gif GIFT SHOP [Mon-Fri(AM/PM/EVE)/Sat(AM/PM)/Sun(PM)]
Volunteers greet customers, handle sales via money/checks/credit cards, replenish the candy supply, deliver gifts or flowers to patients, and dust or straighten as needed.
facegear.gif INFORMATION DESK [D/AM/PM]
Volunteers greet and provide information to visitors and Mercy patients. Duties include answering information phone, sorting and delivering mail, delivering flowers, providing wheelchair transport when needed, and keeping the lobby area tidy.
INFORMATION SYSTEMS [F]
To provide support to the Information Systems staff.
LIBRARY SERVICES [D/F]
Volunteers assist library personnel with routine filing, shelving of library materials and photocopying.
  MAGAZINE/BROCHURE DISTRIBUTOR [F/weekly]
Volunteers distribute new magazines and brochures and recycle old to provide current reading materials and information to visitors and patients in designated areas throughout the hospital.
MAGAZINE SORTER [Once a month]
Volunteers sort and label magazines to provide current reading materials to visitors and patients.

Volunteers greet and provide information to visitors and patients. Duties include answering desk telephone, providing wheelchair assist when needed and keeping the lobby area tidy.
facegear.gif MUSIC MINISTRY [D/EVE/W]
Volunteers provide patients with spiritual enrichments through music. Individual and/or small groups welcome. Music enrichment may be provided on an individual or small group of patients or in a church service setting.

OUTPATIENT TESTING [D/AM/Tue, Wed & Thurs PM]
Volunteers assist Outpatient Services reception staff with various duties, such as assisting patients in gowning (men and women) for tests and escorting patients to the location of their procedure.

OXYGEN TANK INSPECTOR  [D/PM]
Inspect the O2 level of the O2 tank in patient rooms to determine whether they need to be replaced.

PASSPORT 55 [D/AM/PM]
Volunteers assist with office procedures such as tabulating statistics, answering phones, scheduling appointments, taking messages, answering questions about Passport 55 program, registering new members, and making photocopies.
facegear.gif PET THERAPY [D/EVE/W/F]
Volunteers provide an opportunity for patients in rehab and sub acute to experience the socialization, entertainment and other benefits that contact with an animal may have, and specific to each patient's needs and interests. All pets must conform to the standards set forth by Therapy Dogs Incorporated.
PHARMACY [D/AM]
Volunteers provide support to pharmacy staff while gaining knowledge and experience in a pharmacy. Duties include receiving drug orders, identifying orders, prioritizing and relaying orders to pharmacist for processing, assisting with clerical functions, and other duties under supervision.
PHYSICAL THERAPY [D/AM/PM/EVE]
Volunteers supplement the physical rehab staff by doing routine non-patient care duties, such as errands, patient transport, and in therapy treatment area prep.
facegear.gif POTTED PLANT MAINTENANCE [D/F]
Water, fertilize, prune, dust and repot plants in Mercy's main areas. The time frame for this position is flexible and would require about 4 hours per week.

RADIOLOGY TECH ASSISTANT [D/AM/PM]

Volunteer duties include assisting the Radiology staff with other errands or tasks that require limited knowledge about radiology and are easily understood by the volunteer and supervised by a radiology staff member.

facegear.gif RECEPTION DESK [D/W/AM/PM/**]
Volunteer duties include greeting, giving information/directions to visitors, registering patients, escorting patients to outpatient waiting areas, to their rooms, or to emergency. Various office duties, e.g. answering phones, filing.
facegear.gif SHAMPOO SERVICES [F/one day per week to accommodate 3-4 patients]
Provide shampoo services to patients. Also help brighten patients day with light conversation while this service is being performed. Wash, set and style hair when dry.
facegear.gif SHORT TERM PROJECTS [F]
Volunteer for a one-time event or project such as the Mercy Foundation golf outing, or a collating and mailing project.
facegear.gif STUDENT INTERN - VOLUNTEER SERVICES  [F]
Student volunteers interact with prospective volunteers, assist with routine office procedures, possibly work on a special committee planning, evaluating and re-engineering a volunteer assignment or process within the Volunteer Services department.
SURGERY and PROCEDURES ESCORT [D/AM/PM]
Volunteers assist the surgical staff by escorting patients and family to procedure areas.

SURGICAL SERVICES [D/AM/PM]
Volunteers Assist the Surgical staff with General OR Duties that can be done independently after training, including the following;  transporting patients, specimens, x-rays, supplies, records and equipment, assisting with room turnover, cleaning carts, checking oxygen tanks, and department specific needs.

Volunteers conduct tours for groups of children or other guests throughout the hospital.
TRANSPORT SERVICE [D/AM/PM]
Volunteers deliver supplies and equipment to and from nursing units, ancillary departments and support services. Volunteers provide wheelchair transport of patients from unit of discharge to car at hospital entrance. Duties also include pick up and delivery of meal trays from the serving kitchen, running errands, mailings and other projects as requested.

Volunteers provide light clerical duties and provide general assistance including assisting nursing staff with non-medical aspects of care in the areas of Sub acute, Birthplace, Behavioral Health and Patient Care Unit 1(Cardiac and Major Med.) and Patient Care Unit 2 (Orthopaedic). Specific requirements may apply.

Volunteers provide assistance to maintenance staff with routine preventative maintenance on wheelchairs, carts, etc., and other related functions.
